SGI's HPC Cloud Computing Cyclone
Introducing the HPC Cloud
Cyclone™ is the world's first large scale on-demand cloud
computing service specifically dedicated to technical
applications. Cyclone capitalizes on over twenty years of SGI
HPC expertise to address the growing science and engineering
technical markets that rely on extremely high-end
computational hardware, software and networking equipment
to achieve rapid results. Cyclone supports a number of leading
applications partners and five technical domains, including
computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis,
computational chemistry and materials, computational biology
and ontologies.
Two Service Models
Cyclone is available in two service models: Software as a
Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). With
SaaS, Cyclone customers can significantly reduce time to
results by accessing leading-edge open source applications
and best-of-breed commercial software platforms from top
Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). The IaaS model
enables customers to install and run their own applications.
Applications Domain Expertise
With Software as a Service, Cyclone delivers access to leading-
edge open source applications and best-of-breed commercial
software platforms from top Independent Software Vendors
(ISVs). Supported applications in these domains include
OpenFOAM®, NUMECA, Acusolve, LS-Dyna®, Gaussian,
Gamess, NAMD, Gromacs, LAMMPS, BLAST, FASTA; HMMER,
ClustalW and OntoStudio.
Technical Computing Requires a Dedicated Cloud
The SGI technology at Cyclone's core is comprised of some of
the world's fastest supercomputing hardware architectures,
including Intel® Xeon® and Itanium® processors-based SGI®
Altix® scale-up, Altix® ICE scale-out and Altix® XE hybrid
clusters. The hybrid architecture offers either NVIDIA® Tesla
GPUs or AMD FireStream™ GPU Compute Accelerators, both
for floating point double precision; Tilera accelerators are
supported for integer workloads. High performance SGI
InfiniteStorage systems are available for scratch space and for
long-term archival of customer data.
At the system software level, Cyclone offers a flexible
computing environment with the choice of Novell® SUSE® or
Red Hat® Linux® operating systems, further performance-
optimized through the addition of SGI® ProPack™. Altair PBS
Professional® and SGI® ISLE™ Cluster Manager provide
system scheduling and management.
CloudRack™ Breakthrough Density and Configurability
for Cluster Computing
CloudRack Trays
Cool, Clean and Efficient
The CloudRack product family takes a new rack-centric
approach to server design, achieving extreme densities with
break through energy efficiency and high reliability. CloudRack
capitalizes on an ultra-efficient, Eco-Logical™ design which
uses fan-less and cover-less 1U server trays with all cooling
and AC-DC power conversion performed with N+1 redundancy
at the rack level. This assures maximum power usage, cooling
efficiency, and staggering server densities with up to 1824
cores per cabinet.
CloudRack X2
From Scalable, Workgroup Clusters to Scale-Out Data Centers
CloudRack enclosures are available in a variety of form
factors, meeting the most common deployment needs. Only
14U tall, CloudRack X2 is the ideal scalable, workgroup cluster
when deployed on casters in an engineering laboratory
environment. It can also be easily rackmounted in any industry-
standard 19" rack, especially handy for scale-out deployments
in existing rack build-outs. CloudRack C2 realizes even higher
densities with a choice of 24U or 42U, 24-inch wide cabinet
configurations perfect for large data center environments.
The Power XE™ Difference.
CloudRack is the first of many SGI products to utilize Power XE
- a next-generation cabinet-level power distribution technology:
- Virtually eliminates the data center stranded power
problem (a data center's power capacity which is paid
for, but ultimately unused) and provides nearly perfect
phase balancing
- Significantly improves power delivery efficiency by
converting incoming AC power to 99 percent efficient
12V DC power via hot-pluggable, N+1 redundant
rectifiers
- Eliminates server-level power supplies for improved
reliability
Dramatic Thermal Efficiency
CloudRack is thermally optimized to allow data centers to
operate at much higher temperatures, up to 104°F (40°C).
- Higher ambient temperature tolerance means
significantly reduced power consumption by Computer
Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units, radically reducing
operating costs
- Server-level cooling has been eliminated in favor of N+1
redundant, hot swappable and easily serviceable
cabinet-level fan arrays for better enclosure reliability
- Thermally managed airflow from autonomic fan arrays
reduces fan power by over 80% as compared to
conventional AC enclosures
Design to Order Optimization
SGI DTO processes assure CloudRack C2 systems are
tailored to your computing environment and optimized to
support your specific computing applications. Cabinets in 24U
and 42U configurations are built ready to take advantage of
next generation AMD and Intel designs for better performance,
energy efficiency, and virtualization capabilities. CloudRack C2
systems are rigorously tested then shipped to your data center
floor, ready for immediate integration.
CloudRack™ C2 Cool, Clean and Efficient
CloudRack C2 delivers extreme densities with break through
energy efficiency for cluster computing in a unified cabinet
design where power and cooling is centralized at the rack
level. Its Eco-Logical™ design uses fan-less and cover-less 1U
server trays, assuring maximum power usage, cooling
efficiency, and staggering server densities with up to 1824
cores per cabinet.
Ideal for Scale-Out Deployments
CloudRack C2 is the ideal choice for data centers looking to
maximize server density while cutting operational costs. By
leveraging three-phase input power, CloudRack C2 delivers
dramatic bottom-line savings by eliminating stranded power (a
data center's power capacity which is paid for, but ultimately
unused)
Available in both 24U and 42U sizes, the 24-inch wide cabinets
were designed for hot-aisle, cold-aisle data centers.
CloudRack™ X2
The Scalable Workgroup Cluster CloudRack X2 is a unified
enclosure that combines extreme densities with breakthrough
energy efficiency for cluster computing. It brings scalability,
flexibility and efficiency to HPC, graphics and Internet
applications. CloudRack X2 enclosure allows for flexible
deployment either as a stand-alone unit mounted on casters
for in-lab use, or installed in industry-standard 19 inch racks—
especially valuable for heterogeneous computing
environments.
Cool, Clean and Efficient
CloudRack X2 assures maximum power usage, cooling
efficiency, and staggering server densities with up to 216
cores per enclosure in a footprint of only five square feet.
CloudRack X2 capitalizes on an ultra-efficient Eco-logical™
design that uses fan-less and cover-less 1U server trays
installed vertically in the 14U enclosure. As a result, HPC
installations are now able to immediately capitalize on the
many performance, density and thermal advantages of the
tray-based CloudRack design.
Design to Order Optimization for Internet, HPC and
Graphics Environments
SGI DTO processes assure CloudRack X2 systems are
tailored to your computing environment and optimized to
support your specific computing applications. Enclosures are
available to address needs ranging from HPC workgroup
clusters to high-performance quad-socket database servers
and scale-out Internet deployments. GPU-based configurations
are even available to speed graphics calculations. For
investment protection, CloudRack X2 is ready to take
advantage of next generation AMD and Intel designs.
CloudRack X2 systems are rigorously tested then shipped to
your data center floor, ready for immediate integration.
CloudRack™ Trays
CloudRack supports one of the widest selections of server
boards based on the latest Intel and AMD platforms. In
addition, SGI's Day One Advantage assures customer access
to next generation platforms as they become available. The
choice of CloudRack cabinets and trays in conjunction with the
company's design-to-order business model, gives SGI
customers unequaled configuration flexibility.
